Does Snoring Cause High Blood Pressure?

Yes. Snoring can in fact lead to High Blood Pressure. This is mostly due the close link of snoring with Sleep Apnea which is one of the leading factors in causing Stress, Hypertension and High Blood Pressure.

Snoring is the sound emitted when a person is in the deep stages of sleep. Snoring takes place because when a person sleeps, their airways seem to get narrowed down causing the blockage of air while inhaling and exhaling, this air collides with the air passage and causes the tissues of the throat to vibrate. As a result, we hear snoring. Snoring is caused by many factors such as:

  • Gender- Men are found to snore more because they have a narrower air passage than women.
  • Sleeping Position
  • Irregular Sleeping Pattern
  • Smoking
  • Consuming Alcohol
  • Taking Sleeping Pills and Other Sedatives

How are Snoring and High Blood Pressure Related?

Snoring and Sleep Apnea are interlinked with each other mostly due to the fact that they are caused by obstruction in the passage of air. Both these problems are related directly to breathing. Sleep Apnea causes High Blood Pressure due to the irregular activation of the Sympathetic Nervous System as well as the inflammation of blood vessels. Hence, it is quite safe to deduce that snoring is in fact directly inked with High Blood Pressure levels.

According to a study that was conducted in 2000, it was found out that when a person who is around forty years of age or older snores, it is always an indication of more than just snoring. Snoring at such an age could mean that their body is at a greater risk of High Blood Pressure, Cardio Vascular Diseases and even Stroke. Moreover, it was also found that more than that at least half of the subjects who participated in the study suffered from least five episodes of Sleep Apnea. These findings also affirm the link between Snoring, Sleep Apnea and High Blood Pressure.
