Snoring is an unpleasant series of sounds emitted by a person while they are sleeping. It is caused due to the narrowing the airways when a person sleeps. This narrowing causes continuous closing and opening of the airways as air is breathed in.This in turn causes the tissues in the throat to vibrate and leads to snoring. The sound and loudness are affected by the amount of air passing through and the speed with which the throat tissue vibrates.
Snoring and Pregnancy
Snoring is a very common occurrence especially during the 3rd Trimester. According to a study, almost a quarter of women have reported frequent snoring during the night after their 3rd Trimester and another 25 percent women reported occasional snoring until the last week of their pregnancy.
While pregnant women are oblivious of their snoring, their spouses or partners might not be as pleased with this new development. Hence it becomes imperative to understand the cause of snoring during pregnancy and dealing with it as naturally as possible.
Causes of Snoring During Pregnancy

- Swollen Nasal Passages: When a woman is pregnant, she is very likely to undergo various physical changes. Some of these bodily changes can at times be incredibly discomforting. Most women complain of various swollen body parts.
- Similarly, nasal passages of a woman tend to swell up when she is pregnant which causes an obstruction in the breathing in of air. This obstruction often leads to snoring at night.
- Muscle/Tissue/Weight Gain: Many women tend to gain weight as well as muscle and tissue mass during their pregnancy. This gain often leads to extra tissue forming at the back of the throat which could be a cause of snoring.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): OSA could be one the leading causes of snoring for pregnant women and this is something which should be immediately diagnosed and treated as it can be harmful to the mother as well as the child.
Is Snoring During Pregnancy Dangerous?
Yes. Snoring during pregnancy can actually be quite dangerous for the mother as well as the baby. The main reason for this is that snoring often brings with the onset of high blood pressure. This could lead to long term complications such as preeclampsia and other chronic issues for the baby as well as the mother.
Treatments of Pregnancy Snoring
For those women who are extremely discomforted by their snoring during pregnancy, there are various remedies which they can try.
- Nasal Strips have been known to help clear the nasal passageways and allow free regulation of breath.
- Using a light, warm mist humidifier in your sleeping quarters before sleeping is a good way to clear the air in the room.
- A Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device can allow freer regulation of breath.
- Elevating your head slightly while sleeping with a pillow can also help reduce the severity of snoring.
