Nocturia is a disease where a person wakes up during sleep frequently for urinating. It is quite acceptable if a person’s sleep is disturbed once or may be twice however, if the need to take a leak is much frequent, it is definitely a symptom of Nocturia. This disorder is found in every one of three persons and it increase with age. People aged above 60 years normally suffer from this disorder. In older people, the rate of Nocturia is very high. One of the reasons for that is less bladder elasticity in comparison to that of a young person. Also, the body develops certain disorders that can affect the bladder which in turn can cause Nocturia.
With growing age, the efficiency of the circulatory system reduces. Due to this reason the blood leaves behind some waste materials in the tissues of lower parts of the body. Upon lying down, the pumping from these tissues becomes easier and hence the waste material is taken up to the bladder when we sleep. This causes the need to urinate more at night time.
Symptoms of Nocturia

- Frequent urination at night time is a major symptom of Nocturia. For an average person, urinating once is considered normal. If the frequency exceeds two or three then there are high chances that a person may be suffering from Nocturia.
- Sleeplessness also increases when a person feels like urinating more frequently.
Treatment for Nocturia
Nocturia can be cured through various different methods. In some cases, precautionary measures can help reduce the problem while in other cases, medication becomes necessary.
Some of the precautions are as follows:
- Avoidance of excessive fluid intake especially before sleeping.
- Amount of caffeine ingestion should be reduced
- Afternoon naps helps in lessening the rate of building up of fluid in the bladder
- Elevating the legs can help the fluid remix in the blood which can help in reducing Nocturia.
Various medications have been developed for countering Nocturia depending upon the patient’s condition. Some of them are as follows:
- Tolterodine helps relaxing the detrusor muscle present inside the urinary bladder.
- Darifenacin reduces the activity of the bladder through spasm relief.
- Trospium Chloride helps in blocking the sensors of the bladder wall which causes the bladder to relax.
